Louis Joel Arts & Community Centre

Enhance your day in Altona by visiting the Louis Joel Arts & Community Centre, a vibrant hub offering a wide range of activities and supporting the arts and our community.

Discover the Louis Joel Gallery, where a diverse program of visual arts exhibitions awaits. With up to 17 exhibitions annually, it fosters local artist engagement and community cultural development.

Conveniently located near Altona Beach, Altona Pier, the historic Altona Homestead, and the charming cafes, bars, and restaurants of Pier Street, the Louis Joel Arts & Community Centre is the perfect addition to your Altona experience.

Built in the mid-1840s by Alfred and Sarah Langhorne, Altona

Homestead was the first homestead built on the foreshore of Port Phillip Bay. Remaining a private residence until 1920, the homestead changed ownership a number of times and served as a seaside holiday village, Council offices, meeting place for community groups and even a dentist.

In 1989, the refurbished building was officially opened to the public and is home to the Altona Laverton Historical Society.

On the first Sunday of every month, visitors to the Altona Homestead can enjoy Devonshire Tea between 10.30am and 2.30pm or go on a ghost tour at 8.30pm. Head to the Altona Homestead website for more information.

City Theatre

It offers a 244-seat auditorium, complete with raked seating, provides an intimate setting for plays, musicals, concerts, ballet, and more.

Louis Joel Arts & Community Centre

LJAC is a community owned and operated not for profit

organisation located in the heart of Altona. LJAC provide diverse community programs supporting Arts, Community Information, Recreational and Cultural Services to Hobsons Bay. The Louis Joel Gallery holds up to 17 exhibitions each year.

Explosives Reserve

This reserve has a unique history, once having been a storage for explosive

materials. It comprises an historic homestead and under keepers residence, adjacent to an important conservation reserve.

The original vegetation type was sheoak woodland or alkaline dune scrub, dominated by Banksia marginata – silver banksia and Allocasurina verticillata – drooping sheoak. Council is continuing with its rehabilitation works further with revegetation and weed control. The reserve also provides shelter and habitat for the endangered Altona skipper butterfly with a stand of Gahnia filum – Chaffey saw-sedge.

It is open to the public on the first Sunday of most months by tour only. Bookings are not necessary, however see the events calendar for dates and times. Dogs are not permitted in this reserve.
